Flexible, Personalized Learning From Home

Are you interested in homeschooling, remote learning, or creating a more flexible educational experience for your child?

The Port Orford Langlois School District 2CJ offers a flexible remote learning program called the Southwestern Oregon Family Academy (SOFA) designed to support families who want greater choice in how their children learn.

SOFA partners with families to provide individualized educational opportunities while maintaining meaningful connections to our local schools and community.

What Is SOFA?

The Southwestern Oregon Family Academy is an alternative education program within the Port Orford Langlois School District. SOFA was created for families who wish to pursue a remote or home-based educational experience while receiving support from certified educators and access to district resources.

SOFA empowers parents and guardians as their child’s primary educators while providing:

  • Teacher guidance and academic support

  • Free curriculum options

  • Online learning platforms

  • Traditional textbook and paper-based curriculum

  • Personalized educational planning

  • Opportunities for enrichment and community connection

Who Is SOFA For?

SOFA serves a wide variety of learners and families.

Some families choose a fully screen-free homeschool experience using books, paper, hands-on learning, and traditional curriculum.

Other students participate in online learning using platforms such as:

  • Edgenuity

  • Acellus

  • ALEKS

  • Google Classroom

  • Additional approved educational resources

Our program is designed to be flexible and individualized so that each student’s educational experience can meet their unique needs, interests, and goals.

A Win-Win Partnership

SOFA creates a partnership between families and our local public school district that is beneficial for everyone involved.

Families maintain flexibility and individualized learning while still having opportunities to participate in:

  • Local school activities

  • Community events

  • Academic support programs

  • Tutoring opportunities

  • Field trips and educational excursions

  • Social opportunities with peers

We believe students learn best when they feel supported, connected, and empowered.

Why Choose SOFA?

Local - Remain connected to your local school district and community.

Flexible - Create a learning experience tailored to your child’s needs, schedule, interests, and goals.

Supportive - Receive both academic and financial support, including access to curriculum, enrichment opportunities, and instructional guidance.

Curriculum & Academic Support

SOFA families have access to a wide variety of curriculum options and educational resources.

Families work closely with the SOFA instructor to:

  • Select curriculum

  • Build individualized learning plans

  • Set educational goals

  • Monitor student progress

  • Access tutoring and support services

Programming and tutoring opportunities are also available through our Family Academy classroom located on the Pacific High School campus.

Student Enrichment Budget

For the 2026–2027 school year:

  • Grades K–6: Up to $1,600

  • Grades 7–12: Up to $1,200

These funds may be used for approved:

  • Curriculum

  • Academic materials

  • School supplies

  • Educational subscriptions

  • Lessons and enrichment activities

  • Sports and extracurricular opportunities

Up to 100% of the budget may be used for core curriculum, and up to 50% may be used for approved enrichment and supplementary educational expenses.

Pre-approval is required for all purchases.

What Is Involved?

Families enrolled in SOFA collaborate with instructor Kate Hawthorne to create a highly personalized educational experience for each student.

Together, families and the instructor develop:

  • Personalized Education Plans (PEPs)

  • Individual learning goals

  • Progress monitoring plans

  • Curriculum selections aligned to student needs

Regular check-ins help ensure students are progressing toward their goals and receiving the support they need.

Attendance & Communication

The State of Oregon requires daily attendance for all enrolled students.

SOFA families typically report attendance by:

  • Daily check-ins through Remind

  • Weekly Google Forms

  • Regular communication with the instructor

Attendance in a remote learning environment looks different from a traditional classroom, but ongoing communication and evidence of learning help maintain accountability and support student success.

Program Requirements

To remain in compliance with Oregon state requirements, SOFA students must:

  • Participate in regular attendance check-ins

  • Meet required Physical Education minutes

  • Demonstrate adequate academic progress

  • Participate in progress monitoring

  • Obtain pre-approval for purchases

  • Follow the Port Orford Langlois School District academic calendar

SOFA provides comprehensive support for students and families throughout the learning process.

Technology & Assessment

During the 2026–2027 school year, SOFA will utilize:

  • Gmail

  • Google Drive

  • Google Docs

  • Google Sheets

  • Google Classroom

We also strongly encourage participation in:

  • iReady diagnostics

  • Oregon State Assessments

These tools help us better support student growth and learning.
