Mentor Program Select junior and senior students are trained to work with young people on issues relating to self-esteem. High school students are matched with elementary and middle school students and serve as "big brothers and sisters" throughout the school year. Mentors meet with their counterparts twice per month. S.T.A.R.S. Students Today Aren't Ready for Sex is a statewide program designed to provide information for 6th grade students. Trained high school students meet with middle school students for five consecutive days to provide instruction on why young people should postpone sexual involvement until they are adults. Student Empowerment Program (SEP) Sponsored and staffed by The Curry County Prevention Program, a trained SEP adult facilitator meets weekly with small groups of students on issues that may be interfering with their lives. Discussion topics include improving social skills, anger management, increasing self-esteem, and coping with stress. Referral forms are available in the counseling office. Community Service All students graduating from Pacific High School are required to perform at least 35 hours of community service. Community service may not be court-ordered, cannot be related to a class fund-raising activity, and cannot result in payment. The work must be completed for the community and not for private individuals or enterprises. The school record for community service is 704 hours over a four-year period. Early Intervention Program Operated by the Curry County Juvenile Department, this program is designed to provide at-risk young people with counseling and guidance. At-risk behaviors can include antisocial behavior, school problems, dysfunctional family, substance abuse, and poor peer relationships. Requests for early intervention are available in the counseling office.
