Driftwood School Library

The first library book purchased and written into an accession book at Driftwood School was in November 1959. The building that we now have was built a few years earlier than that and was called Port Orford Elementary.

Driftwood has seen many changes since then. With these changes the library has evolved into what it is today. 1993/94 saw a major remodel of a very cramped library space into a beautiful little library that now serves kindergarten through 8th grade. The library today not only houses up-to-date book/media resources for our students but also our school’s computer lab with 21 online computers available for learning and research.

Because of our young (K-5) student population, we have an extensive collection of young people’s picture-book/easy fiction. With the addition of the junior high students in 2000/01 we have added many new middle school reference/non-fiction/biographies/fiction books along with new shelving space to accommodate them.

Librarian Jean Marsh has provided a scan of an original "accession sheet" used to inventory books in the early days of the library. Read her explanation below:

Driftwood Library Accession Book

"An accession book is one way "old-time" libraries used to keep track of all the books purchased and on the shelves, discarded or lost, by giving that book a number in the order it was acquired - Sort of like an inventory in a book. I still use one here at Driftwood, as do many other small libraries, just because that was how I was taught and I love the hard copy of history I see when I open the older accession books.

I recognize each librarian's writing over the years and really get a big kick out of seeing which books have survived the ravages of time and are still on the shelves and being used from MANY years ago. We are now on accession #13172. That does not mean we have that many books at Driftwood, just that many books/audio books/VHS/DVD etc. have been purchased and entered into an accession book since November 1959.

As you can see from this page many are not around any more because of damage/loss/discard."

Pacific High School Library - Open School Hours 7:30 - 3:30 Daily

Pacific High School Library

Pictured below is the first Library Staff of the newly built Pacific High School from the 1958 "Pirate Scope" annual. Unfortunately, there are no longer any records of accession for us to enjoy, but there are still many of the original books still on our shelves.

We are constantly updating our collection to include books on tape, VHS/DVD's, and are looking forward to an addition of wireless laptops that will be available for in-library use in the 2007-2008 school year.

After a long and arduous couple of years, we are now part of the online Curry County Library Network. This enables the staff and students to use an Interlibrary-Loan system.

I wonder what the ladies would think of their library now? :D

Blanco School Library - Open School Hours 8:00 - 3:30 Daily

Blanco School Library

After approximately ten years of standing empty, the current Blanco School was remodeled and re-opened in 1993 as the middle school for the 2CJ District. The library books were transported from the old Blanco School in the red brick building down the street to the new library at today’s Blanco School. At that time the books were predominately middle school level, but since then the elementary grades have joined the middle school. K-5 grade level books have been bought and donated to make the library more versatile for the lower grades. The Blanco library now includes a wide variety of books for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Blanco Library Under Construction

This year Blanco has seen some fantastic changes to the library. At the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year, a computer lab was set-up in the library giving our students more access to the 21 on-line computers to do research and take Accelerated Reader (AR) tests. After years of having part-time librarians, in October of 2007 2CJ District hired a full-time library assistant for the Blanco library. Cindy Pogwizd has been very busy organizing the library and ordering new books with accelerated reader tests. The library now has 3,830 accelerated reader tests available. Some of the future goals for the library are to have AR tests for all of the existing fiction books inthe library, review the research books and up-date as needed, and order more young reader non-fiction books.

Books Being Sorted

In January 2007 Blanco and Driftwood Schools were invited to be included in a unique opportunity to join the integrated library system called “Library.Solution” at a very low cost. The system comes from The Library Corporation (TLC) which already serves our high school and four public libraries in Curry County. This program will allow us to catalog our books using scanning software and enter them into the group catalog which will be available on-line. Blanco and Driftwood Schools would then be able to move forward with an automated circulation and cataloging functions. This necessary improvement will cost $5000. The Blanco and Driftwood libraries have applied for and received a matching-fund grant of $2500 needed for the start up cost. We are optimistic that with other grants and donations we will raise the $2500 needed to match the grant and implement the system in the 2007-2008 school year.
