Water Quality

Ashley Curry, Shawnee Potter

We’re the water quality group and we want you to know about our 6 month experience on Brush Creek, located 6 miles south of Port Orford.

We were in charge of making sure the water is safe. We checked the pH, temperature, D.O. (Dissolved Oxygen), velocity, nitrates, phosphates, E. choli, and Choliform counts.

These tests tell if the temperature is at the right point and if the water quality tests prove healthy.  These test determine if the aquatic animals and plants are getting enough nutrition and enough oxygen.

We collected all this data, then designed a power point presentation to  represent our research at the Coos Curry Science Symposium. This was held on April 11th 2006, at the Gold Beach Fair Grounds.

About the Water Quality
Team

This is Ashley being herself. In this picture she is recording data that Shawnee is telling her from a Dissolved Oxygen Sample.

Text Box: This is Shawnee looking at the camera, with the pH record sheet in her left hand and a pencil in her right.

This is Shawnee timing the speed of the orange for velocity.

This is Shawnee and I trying to stay out of the water to warm up. We are wearing vests, wet sweatshirts and wet pants. BRRRRRRR!!!!!! It’s cold out there in the winter.

Stacia Ryder from Curry Soil and Water  Conservation Education is one of the volunteer helpers to come and help us out with this whole project. Along with Blair and Rebecca from ODFW, Matt Swanson, and Abby Bradbury.

Tape measure. We used this tool to measure the width of the stream that we were surveying.

This is an orange. We used this tool to measure the speed it took to get 25ft. down stream, which tells the flow and velocity of the river.

This is a calculator. We used this tool to help us tell the distance and the average width and depth of the stream.
